John Joseph Dolan, 80, of Dubuque, IA passed away on Monday January 15, 2018 at home.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7p.m. Thursday January 18th, 2018 at Hoffman Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 19th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with Rev. Andrew Awotwe-Mensah officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
John was born on May 13, 1937 to Albert and Marie (Basten) Dolan. John graduated from Loras Academy and went on to attend Barber College. He married Sheila Thompson on August 16, 1958.
After graduating from barber college, John started working with his father at Dolan Deluxe Barber Shop in July 1957, this was the barber shop his uncle started in 1928. John recently celebrated 60 years of cutting hair. John had a true passion for being a barber. He enjoyed his customers that became friends over the years and looked forward to catching up with them at their appointments. As John once said "You know, it doesn't seem like 60 years to me. John was proud of his Irish heritage and he was an avid Cubs fan. He enjoyed gardening and everyone loved his famous salsa. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed by those left to cherish his memory.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Sheila Dolan and two children Kim (Jim) Dolan-Backhaus of Hustisford, WI and Patrick Dolan of Dubuque, IA. He is also survived by three grandchildren Nicole Schueller of Brookfield, IL, Ashley (Ryan) Nyhus of Verona, WI and Austin (Erin Rebholz) Nicholls of Sandy Springs, GA, three great-grandchildren Morgan Schueller, Caidence and Wesley Nyhus; his siblings, Beverly Kluesner, Jenny (James)Givens, Albert (Nancy) Dolan and Bobby Dolan; and his sister-in-law, Jannan (Tom) Pauly.
He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Marie Dolan, his siblings Roger Dolan, Dory (Tom) Meyer and Denny (Betty) Dolan; and his parents-in-law, Elmer and Alo Thompson
