Kathryn Alice Merkel, 83, Indianapolis, passed away on January 24, 2018. Kathryn was born in Freeburg, IL on August 15, 1934 to the late Dr. Russel and Lillian Merkel.
Kathryn graduated from Howe High School and achieved her Bachelor's degree in Education. She went on and received her Master's degree in Spanish and taught Spanish for 32 years at North Central High School. Kathryn was a 50 year member and a past president of the Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was a member and food pantry translator for the First Baptist Church, Docent and translator for the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and a volunteer at Connor Prairie. Kathryn visited over 25 countries and was a teacher leader for People to People Student Ambassadors for 12 years in Europe.
Kathryn is survived by her sister, Ruby Matthew (Ed) and nephew Mark R. Matthew (Sawako); and nephews, Kai and Casey.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church at a later date.
