Lloyd Berner, 76, Lily, died peacefully at home with his wife, Barbara, on Monday, November 24, 2008. Lloyd was born on August 8, 1932, in Marshfield, to the late Anton Peter Berner and Lena Agnes Wunsch. On April 9, 1952, he married Barbara Anita Brandt and to this union were born Debra, Michael, Mary Beth, and Susan Marie. Lloyd and Barbara celebrated over 56 years of marriage. Lloyd and Barbara first met in the tenth grade at Wausau Senior High in Wausau. After high school, Lloyd attended the University of Wisconsin, Marathon Campus in Wausau. In February 1951, Lloyd joined the U.S. Marine Corp. and served as a meteorologist during the Korean War. In later years, meteorology became second nature to him. It was a guiding factor to him, even when fishing. In April 1951, while on leave Lloyd and Barbara became engaged. In Moorehead City, North Carolina, Lloyd and Barbara were married. They lived in an apartment there until they were able to secure base housing. Lloyd was discharged from the service in February 1954. artments in Wausau. Lloyd secured employment with Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPSC) and while employed with WPSC, Lloyd engaged in a transfer to Antigo. There, Lloyd and Barbara made their home in an apartment on 7th Avenue until 1955, when they purchased their home on E. 10th Avenue. With employment with WPSC and raising his children in Antigo, Lloyd's free time was spent small game hunting, trout fishing, and becoming an accomplished Bridge player. Lloyd's career with WPSC eventually took he and Barbara to Stevens Point. While living in Stevens Point, Lloyd had been a director on the boards of the United Way of Portage County, the Portage County Economic Corp., and the Overall Economic Development Committee of Portage County having also been its chairman. Lloyd served as a commissioner and chairman of the Stevens Point Housing Authority and the Antigo Housing Authority with direct involvement in the planning and the construction of the elderly and low-income housing projects of both. He held advisory posts with Northcentral Technical and the Mid-State Technical Colleges and was a community resource for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Lloyd's free time there was spent enjoying his children, grandchildren, fly fishing, and woodworking (which produced many beautiful and fine pieces throughout the years). In April 1989, Lloyd retired from WPSC, following a 40-year career as district manager with the assignments at Antigo and then at Stevens Point. Lloyd and Barbara retired to their little piece of heaven in Lily, Wisconsin. Early in his retirement and while still in good health, Lloyd enjoyed fly fishing on the Lily River and continued with his woodworking. Lloyd was an active member of St. Mary's Parish at Pickerel, past member of the Pearson-Pickerel Lions Club as well as a past president of the club. He was pleased to be a board member of the Community Health Foundation, an affiliate of Langlade Hospital. Lloyd said, "It's an opportunity to be of service to an area in which we have chosen to live out our retirement where the people and the quality of life are the best we have experienced. (Great trout fishing also helps.) Service to others has always been a personal commitment". Lloyd was proud to be a member of the NRA, the Republican Party, and Modern Woodman of America. In addition to his wife, Barbara, survivors include one son, Michael, Pickerel; three daughters, Debra (Bruce) Kluever, Hazelhurst, Mary Beth (Rick) Zinda, Green Bay, and Susan Marie (Doug) Ross, Plover; 8 grandchildren, Dina, Kurt, Tara, Jacob, Jason, Amanda, Samantha, and Ryan; 9 great-grandchildren, Kraig, Aeric, Luke, Isabel, Joshua, Alena, Alisha, Nicholas, and Baby K.; cousins and their families. In addition to his mother and father, Lloyd was preceded in death by one brother, Dale. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 28th, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, N9155 State Road 55, Pickerel. Father Roger Stroebel will officiate. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 28, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. There will be a private family entombment at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Antigo.
