In 1984 Jack and Carol bought the Standard gas station, changed the name to Shortline, where he designed, built and repaired agricultural equipment for the regions farmers. He continued to operate Shortline until January 1994 when fire destroyed the building. Not being a man to rest on his laurels, Jack enrolled at NIACC where he received an Associate's degree in Business in 1997, and worked at Corwith High School. In 1998, he began working as a Trades Leader at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility, designing and building structures, security devices, and equipment, retiring in 2008. Following his retirement, Jack continued to work on projects with friends and family. He and Carol also enjoyed spending time at their camper on Lost Island Lake near Ruthven, cruising the lake in Nessie as well as hosting a multitude of friends and family. Jack was known for many things to many people during his life - Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle and great Friend. To the community he was a Self-taught Engineer, Inventor and Patent Holder. He was a Politician, a Philosopher and all round problem solver. People trusted his council whether it was for mechanical or personal reasons. He was methodical when searching for answers, and was almost always right in his conclusions. He was a chef and along with Carol, enjoyed feeding the masses whenever needed. He was a brilliant strategist; he served as union representative at both FDL and FDFC. He was a fantastic card player, where he excelled at pitch, 500 and cribbage. He could be Mischievous, Caring, and Obstinate and had radiant Sense of Humor. On Saturday, January 27, 2018, we lost this treasure when Jack passed away, surrounded by family at his home in Corwith. He was 71. He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Douglas (Falkirk, Scotland) and Kimberly; four grandchildren, Nicole, John, Dakota, and Karlee; two great-grandchildren, Eden and Ivy all of Corwith; step-sisters, Doris, Pat and Sherry; brother-in-law, Brett (Lana) Fish; sister-in-law, Laura Fish and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-dad, Deral "Dutch" Butrick; sister, Judy Fritz; mother and father-in-law, Albert and Vera Fish; brothers-in-law, Pete Fritz, Albert "Skip", Ron and Bryan Fish and several step siblings.
