William John Tjernagel was born in Randall, Iowa on November 3, 1933 to Ole and Gladys (Johnson) Tjernagel. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He married Helen Ritland on March 23, 1957. Bill worked for the Story City Creamery, owned the Phillips 66 gas station and retired from Iowa State. Bill was a lifetime resident of Story City and was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Story City Masonic Lodge, and Story County Shrine. He enjoyed gardening, watching westerns, doing puzzles and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. Bill was very community minded and his family was very important to him, especially his grandchildren. Bill passed away February 7, 2018 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames at the age of 84. Bill is survived by his wife, Helen of Story City; his children, Cindy Tjernagel (Keith Leslie) of Auburn, NE, Sandy (Roger) Handsaker of Radcliffe, Karen Broderick of Johnston, Kirk (Debbie) Tjernagel of Plainfield, IL and Laura (John Bulika) Fine of Ballwin, Missouri; six grandchildren, Logan Handsaker, Angela Kleinke, Kaitlyn Tjernagel, Cody Tjernagel, Noah Fine and Josh Buluka and 4 great grandchildren, Lydia, Seth, Ruby and Brynle.
