How Did We Do?

Richard Wesley Norman

Richard Wesley Norman passed away on February 15, 2018 at his home in Everett, Washington. He was scheduled for tests on his heart in preparation for surgery when his heart gave out. He died peacefully in his sleep which is all we can ask.
Dick was born in Kalispell, Montana on October 23, 1959 to Roy and Eleanor Norman. He was diagnosed with an intellectual disability early on and his parents were told not to expect him to live past his teen years. He would have been fifty-nine this year. He fooled them!

Dick was a jokester and liked to play tricks on people. Bryan remembers when he was 4 or 5 years old Dick chasing him around the yard yelling "I'm gonna get you, you little rascal". He liked to try to pull a prank and then when it didn't work he would say "I guess my trick didn't work". Another favorite comeback was "I think I'll pass on that". These remained some of his go to sayings throughout his life. One of his nicknames was "tricky Dick".

He loved riding his Moped and when the family moved back to Iowa they were out in the country and Dick could ride a scooter on the road safely. Later in the Seattle area he had an electric scooter (actually several over the years) that he could ride to the store or tavern.

Before scooters he was capable of riding his bicycle to the bus stop and loading it on and going downtown Seattle or wherever he wanted to go. He had the bus routes figured out. He was fearless.

He had an uncanny memory of certain things- like who the actors were on his favorite shows. A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard and MASH were some of his favorite shows.

His biggest passion was Legos. He loved to build things with them. He loved car rides with Mom which usually involved collecting water and coffee mugs (hundreds of them). He was a bit of a hoarder and he did not let anyone touch "his stuff". He knew exactly what he had and he knew if anything was missing.

He is survived by his mother Eleanor Norman and siblings Linda Fleming, Marc (and Judy) Norman, Betsy (and Roy) Meguro and Tim Norman; Nieces Vicki, Jenni and Sara and nephews Bryan and Justin as well as great nieces and nephews. Dick will be missed by those who knew and loved him; especially family, housemates and staff from the Volunteers of America home where he lived for the past five years.
