He worked as a self-employed farmer in Mason City area for seventy-five years. He was proud of farming with his two boys and grandson.
Bernard was a member of the Odd Fellows, Mason City.
He will be known for his hard work and dedication to his farming. He enjoyed playing cards, horse shoeing, shuffle board and pool. Bernard looked forward to wintering in Florida, after the harvest was completed.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Carol McMurray, Mason City; four children, Judy Olinger, Mason City, Virginia (David) DeWitt, Mason City, John (Cathy) McMurray, Mason City and Charles (Beverly) McMurray, Mason City; two step children, Jim (Carol) Bushong, Indiana, and Mindy (John) Collazo, Florida; sister, Ruth "Susie" Rhodes, Fertile, along with numerous grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean E. McMurray; parents, William and Anna McMurray; three brothers, Wayne, Lester and James McMurray; grandson, Bernard A. DeWitt; step daughter, Lana Tumbleson.
