within the College of Education. Additionally, he taught Secondary Education for 25 years, retiring as an Emeritus Professor on December 31, 1989. He received the University's Outstanding Service Award, the Faculty Citation, and the Student Affairs Human Relations Award. He was also a member of ISU's Order of the Knoll and the University of Michigan's John Monteith Legacy Society. From 1953-1960 during their summers, schoolteachers Wally and Jan owned and operated a cabin resort on Hubbard Lake near Alpena, Michigan. In addition to their all-season home and five cottages, the young entrepreneurs ran a bakery, much to the delight of locals and vacationers seeking delicious home baked goods. As a hobby, Wally raised and showed Dalmatians throughout the Midwest. He was very successful showing his dogs to confirmation championships and in obedience trials. In Ames, Wally was active in Iowa Special Olympics (25 years), Camp O.K. (summer camp for talented and gifted 5th and 6th graders), and the Ames International Partner Cities organization. He was a life member of the Masons. He was past president of the Ames Noon Kiwanis Club and served as Lt. Governor of the Nebraska-Iowa District Kiwanis within that organization. Survivors include his beloved children, Nancy Schloerke of Leadville, Colorado and Karl (Cheryl) of Ames, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and brother, Kenneth of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Wally was preceded in death by his dear wife of 57 years, Janice (2005) and his parents. Any memorials may be directed to the Iowa Special Olympics, Noon Kiwanis Club of Ames Foundation, Bethany Life at Story City and/or Northcrest Community Foundation. Special thanks from the family goes out to all of Northcrest Community, the nurses and aides at Northcrest Care Center, and Dr. Rudrapatna for the love and care they gave Wally.
