Roy Allen Gillette, 84, of rural Burlington died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Blair House Nursing and Rehab. Born July 4, 1925 in Columbus Junction, he was the son of Roy Edwin and Bessie May Hathaway Gillette. On December 29, 1946 he married Mary June Hartley in Davenport. Mr. Gillette was a 1943 graduate of Davenport High School and a 1950 graduate of Iowa State University, receiving his engineering degree. Mr. Gillette was a Marine veteran of World War II. He served as a sergeant in the amphibious tractors unit. He was an engineer at J.I. Case Co. in Rockford, Illinois until 1970 before moving to Burlington and becoming chief engineer, retiring in 1987. In his retirement, he created Gillette Enterprises, doing repair work and woodworking. Mr. Gillette was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church and involved in Christian Action. He was a member of the Elks and Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, where he was very active in the annual Toys for Tots campaign. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, fishing and hunting. apids and Mary (Dan) Gillette-Hoffman of Burlington; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce (Martin) Bruene of Gladbrook and Clarissa Waltman of Portland, Oregon; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. Friends may call from noon until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 21st, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Gillette will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 22nd, in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Kirk Bennett officiating. The Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League will conduct military rites. The committal service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22nd, at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials have been established for West Avenue Baptist Church and Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League.
