Ruth D. Valen was born to John M. and Carrie Valen on June 18, 1921 in Story City, Iowa, the 4th of six children. She received her education in the Story City Schools. She worked at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant during World War II. After it closed, Ruth worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center for almost 38 years. After her retirement, Ruth moved back to Story City and enjoyed many years of volunteer work. She lived at Cedar Place until her death on March 30, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Larry (Beverly), C. Joseph "Joe" (Maryann) and John Valen both of Story City; and a sister, Kathleen "Kay" of Story City. Ruth is survived by a sister, Hannah (Thaine) Ellis of Lynden, Washington and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Valen of Story City. Also preceding her in death were six half- brothers and half-sisters. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews survive. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Bethany Manor Chapel. Burial will be in the Story City Cemetery with private family graveside services.
