rses to serve. While serving her country she met and married 1st Lieutenant Earl L. Wood who preceded her in death. To this union, a daughter, Yvonne was born. Elsie was always interested in learning and in the late 1960's she enrolled in and graduated from the Madame Walker Beauty College, maintaining her license well into the 1980's. She also worked for Naval Avionics and The Government Services Administration. In 1973, she graduated from Bryman Professional Careers Institute as a Dental Assistant. Because of Elsie's love of music, she joined a group of senior women called "The Bag Ladies" who performed at various nursing homes and VFW Halls around the city. Her talents included singing and playing the harmonica and the tambourine. She also served as the group's secretary. The Bag Ladies were even featured on an afternoon television news program. God blessed Elsie with 103 great years. She departed this earthly life on April 3, 2018. Elsie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Yvonne; son-in-law Donald Whittaker; nieces: Roberta Marshall, Martha Parker (Milton), Margret Visor of Racine WI, Rose King (Duke) of Stanford, Virginia, Hazel Brinkley (William), Ruth Brewer (Desi), Alexis Coats (William), Karen Clay, Sue Lane, Rosa Sailes, Chicago, IL, Tina Clay, Karen Clay, Vicky Pierson; nephews: Ralph Clay Jr (Marilyn), John Clay (Sara), George Brown (Mary), Tyrone Clay (Ashley), Anthony Clay, William Clay Jr., Michael Holland; and a host of grand, and great-grand nieces and nephews.
