Co., 2nd Bn., 8th Cav. Rgt., 1st Calvary Div. and was honorably discharged in 1973. He started working as a Federal Meat Inspector stationed at Rath Packing Co., in Waterloo in 1971. He married Debra Weaver in 1973. They later divorced. Of this union, two daughters were born. He transferred to the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 where he worked as a manual distribution clerk and later as a mail processor. He retired in 2010, after 41 ½ years of federal service. He was a lifelong union member and served as AFGE Waterloo local president for three years. He enjoyed stamp collecting, rock collecting, history, sports, friends, U.S. travel, and especially family. He was a life member of the 1st Cav. Div. Assn, Disabled American Veterans, Angry Skipper Assn., Combat Infantrymen's Assn., 8th Cavalry Rgt. Assn, and Sons of Confederate Veterans. Survived by: two daughters, Alaina (Adam) Small of Urbandale and Emily (Seth) Gieson of Bloomington, Il.; four grandchildren, Noah and Landon Small and Daisy and Flynn Gieson; a brother, Michael (Julie) Shoopman of Ft. Dodge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: his parents Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Waterloo First United Methodist Church where there will be full military honors conducted by the Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, the Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the United States Army Honor Guard. Burial will occur at a later time. Visitation will be 4-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and for an hour before the service at the church.
