Al passed away May 28, 2018, in Burien, Washington. He was born on September 19, 1941, in New Salem, North Dakota, the son of Clarence and Verna Dettmann. Al's family later moved to Harlowton, Montana, where he served as team captain of Harlowton High School's baseball, basketball, and football teams and graduated as valedictorian. He went on to graduate from the University of Montana. In 1963 he began his service as an officer in the US Air Force, launching a distinguished 20-year career that took him across the country and around the world. During his service he completed a tour in Viet Nam, earned a Master's Degree from Auburn University, and worked at the Pentagon. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1983 and began a career as an aerospace consultant in Seattle. After his second retirement, he pursued his love of golf, bowling, history, genealogy, sports, reading, public television, movies, and spending time with family and friends. Al is survived by his two children, three siblings, and extended family near and far. [more]
