McCracken Concrete Pipe in Sioux City, IA. In 1967, they moved to Ottumwa, IA where he owned and operated Nelson Roofing for 30 years. They were blessed with four children. Lowell was active in the Rotary Club of Ottumwa and was president several times. He was also active at the troop and district level of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver award. He was president of the Iowa Roofing Contractors Association in 1972. He was crowned "Boss of the Year" in 1974 by the Goldfinch Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. He was on the Ottumwa Hospital Board for many years and president in 1984. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Ottumwa. Lowell enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants, mushroom hunting, fishing and downhill skiing. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques. He was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Lowell will be greatly missed by his wife Alma of Ottumwa; children Susan (Mike) Moore of Carroll, IA, Jim (Cherie) Langland of Ottumwa, Tom (Penny) Langland of Morris, IL, and John (Traci) Langland of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren Ian (Hannah) Moore, Nathaniel Moore, Jack Langland, Tomas Langland, Steven Langland, Nellie Langland, Oliver Langland, Schyler (Kevin) Cochran, Brittani Langland, Christopher Langland, and Brooke Langland; great granddaughter Charlotte Moore; sister-in-law Esther Langland, and many nieces and nephews scattered across the country. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Gladys Peterson, Margaret Johnson, Delores Sherwood, Arleane Stewart, Francis Langland, and Floyd Langland. Lowell has provided a noble gift by becoming part of the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program and will be interred at a later date. Lowell grew up in the Great Depression, served in World War II, owned his own business, and raised a loving and successful family- there was no greater embodiment of the Greatest Generation.
