How Did We Do?

Stanley Antone Bernard
January 23rd, 1949 - July 6th, 2018
Stanley Antone Bernard, age 69, passed away on July 6th, 2018 at home in Lynnwood, Washington surrounded by his family. Stan was born in Woodburn, Oregon on January 23rd, 1949 to father Donald Bernard and mother Jeannette Bernard. Throughout the years he recounted stories of playing sports, building a house with his father, drag racing, time in the Navy, going out to the beach, hunting in Paisley, his father's Chevrolet dealership, good friends and countless stories of his siblings and many others.

In 1962 Stan's family moved from St. Paul, Oregon to Woodburn, Oregon into a house Stan helped his father build. His father owned Bernard Chevrolet in Woodburn and his mother worked as a nurse. Though he lived in Woodburn, Stan eventually took the trip to Mt. Angel every day to attend Mt. Angel Preparatory School (now John F. Kennedy High School) lettering in baseball, basketball, football and track and field and graduating from high school in 1967. He spent a brief time at the University of Oregon before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1968.

Proudly serving his country, Stan had duty stations in Seattle, Washington and Naples, Italy. He sailed all around the world on the U.S.S. Denver LPD-9 and served a tour in Vietnam on the U.S.S. Defiance PG95 and was honorably discharged in 1972 as a Yeoman 2nd Class Petty Officer.

Upon returning to Oregon, Stan enrolled at Clackamas Community College. In February of 1973, at his cousin's wedding, he met the love of his life, Diane Rivenes. They married in September 1973 and moved to Eugene where Stan completed another year at the University of Oregon. Stan and his wife then moved back to Woodburn (where they eventually bought their first home) after Stan transferred to Portland State University. Stan graduated from Portland State with a bachelor's degree in business. While going to college Stan worked at Merrill Lynch part time and then full time after graduating. Stan then worked in Salem for Marion County for a couple of years. Stan then began working for Sunshine Pizza as a store manager for various branches near Portland, and eventually transferred to their restaurants in the Salem area. Stan and his wife moved to Woodinville, Washington in 1982, where he continued to work for Sunshine Pizza in Kirkland, Washington and eventually for Godfather's Pizza. Stan later went into business for himself and started B & G Chem-dry with his childhood best friend, Tim Gorman. Stan later started his business, Reliable Maintenance Company, where he continued carpet cleaning, window washing, and house painting until his retirement in 2012. Over the years he built close relationships with hundreds of his customers and was always humble in the quality of his work.

Stan was never in a quiet room and always had a joke or a story to tell. He had a lifelong passion of writing short stories, kept a journal for decades, was very creative in the kitchen, a master on the grill, and enjoyed cooking for anyone. Stan loved hunting, taking trips to the Oregon coast, going to classic car shows, sharing his love for Chevrolets, and working on his 1965 Chevy pickup in his free time.

Stan will always be remembered for his charismatic and charming personality. He was a patriot and was fond of time spent serving in the United States Navy. His memories of borrowing cars from his father's Chevy dealership always brought a smile to his face. Stan was selfless and humble, a devoted husband of nearly 45 years, a loving dad and was thrilled to be a papa. He will be dearly missed.

Stan was preceded in death by his father Donald Bernard, mother Jeannette Bernard, and brother T.J. Bernard, and is survived by his wife Diane Bernard, 4 children: Brian Bernard, Sarah Bernard, Kevin Bernard, and Erin Crock, 5 grandchildren: Preston and Olivia Worthington, Emmalyn and Hudson Crock, and Mia Bernard, and his siblings Michael Bernard, Nannette Fleck, and David Bernard.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church, 20217 Christie St, St Paul, OR 97137 on Saturday, July 28th at 10:00am with a reception to follow.

The family suggests donations to St. Paul Catholic Church.
