he north shore with their young son Max, and Steve continued that sojourn north to fish with Max for many years after her death. After Pam's early death, also from cancer, Steve found Connie Wilson, who was his companion and second mother to Max. They spent over 20 years together in the wooded compound they created together with their neighbor and dear friend Doug Byers. He loved the children he taught. Steve spent his professional life helping his students as a special needs teacher at Lawson Elementary and Beavercreek Elementary in Johnston. He and his band of associates took the children on field trips and showed them the world. He was revered by the parents of the children he cared for and took many of those children far beyond where the "specialists" said they would or could ever go. The last few years he spent at his "dream job" as a caretaker at the Waveland Golf Course. He could really mow a mean circle and got joy from his days on the course with the crew of guys who put up with his hippie ways and vegetarian lunches. He loved trees and planted a forest on his land much to the consternation of some of his neighbors. Some of them got it. Some of them did not. He was grateful for those who did. Steve loved life. He was honest, compassionate, funny, stubborn, sensitive, loyal and generous. His laugh was huge and unforgettable. He was known for his authenticity and never put on airs. Steve was one of a kind. We who love him will hear him speak when the wind blows through his trees and miss him every moment of every day. The family is grateful to Debbie and the Unity Point Hospice crew for their constant love and care for Steve and for all of us. Per Steve's wishes there will be a private graveside family service. If you would like to honor Steve's memory, please plant a tree or howl at the moon.
