started as a young boy selling papers and magazines and watching over his younger brothers. He also cared for his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. As a young man, Fred volunteered for the military before he was of legal age to enter, and his mother had to accept his high school diploma on his behalf because he had already shipped out to join the Army. After his time in the military and completing law school, Fred moved back to Waterloo, married Ruth, and raised two daughters. He and Ruth recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He was admitted to practice law in Iowa, in federal court, and in the United States Supreme Court. During his esteemed legal career, he established the claim of loss of consortium for spouses in Iowa and was a finalist for the Iowa Supreme Court. Many people would seek his counsel or legal opinion, including many of his peers in the legal field and judges who acknowledged his mastery of law. He was an avid reader with stacks of books throughout the house. He excelled as a public speaker and storyteller. He supported the Waterloo Public Library. He also enjoyed fly fishing, tying his own flies, and preparing holiday turkeys. Most of all, he valued the special time he spent with his daughters and wife. Fred is survived by his wife, Ruth White of Waterloo; one daughter, Lu Ann (Barry Russell) White of Johnston, IA; three brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sue Ellen White; and two brothers, Richard "Dick" and John White.
