Doc Edwards, 81, passed away on August 20, 2018 to play baseball in the ball field in the sky. Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way. Doc was born in Red Jacket, West Virginia and was a Navy medic. After serving his country, Doc signed to play professional baseball. Docs fifty plus years in professional baseball included playing catcher for the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, and New York Yankees. The highlight of his years as catcher was playing with his idol, Mickey Mantle. Later, Doc was a coach for the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets. He reached his all-time peak as manager of the Cleveland Indians. Upon retiring from the MLB, Doc was a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks inaugural team. Doc started managing independent leagues, finishing his career as manager for the San Angelo Colts. Doc will always be remembered by his players as a man of great respect and integrity. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife; two sisters; two brothers; his four children; two step sons; ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
