d in 1987. David went to Hazelden for treatment and later to the Talbot Recovery Center in Atlanta, GA. in 1992. Since that time, he had been in sobriety for almost 26 years. His periods of depression still remained. David started to work for an Atlanta law firm and made new friends in the area where he enjoyed the warmer climate. He was very active in Alcoholics Anonymous where he helped others to overcome their dependency. He often had people in need stay in his apartment, offering them food and shelter until they were able to function for themselves. David was a kind, sympathetic, and caring person. In spite of periods of depression, he was always reaching out to help others less fortunate. David had undergone several major surgeries in the past few years. He moved back to the Twin Cities last October but his health problems prevailed. David is survived by his parents, Henry and Ardys Bartel of Rochester; brothers, Richard of St. Anthony and Dr. Brian (Candace) of Long Beach, CA; daughter Emily (Justin) Gilmer of Portland, OR; granddaughter Simone Gilmer of Menomonie, WI; nephew and niece Joseph and Abigail Bartel; his former wife Bonnie (Matt Foldenauer) and friend Duane Hodges. Also, a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. David was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Bartel in 1966.
