Ivyl Carroll Tarbell, age 86, of Centerville, Iowa, died December 10, 2008, at his home in Centerville, surrounded by his family. On October 29, 1922, Ivyl was born, in Melrose, Iowa to Charles Duncan and Ella Mary (Eaton) Tarbell Quist. He married Olive Jean Phillips on February 27, 1949, at Dale Church in Centerville, Iowa. He attended Pleasant Hill Country School through the 8th grade. As a young adult, Ivyl accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville, Iowa, where he was a youth leader, usher, and a deacon. Ivyl was a farmer and loved raising Angus cattle. He also worked at Union Carbide for many years. After Ivyl retired, he helped several years at the Lange Funeral Home. He thought so much of all the workers at the funeral home. There was a strong bond of closeness that was so precious to him. Some of Ivyl's great loves were Nascar racing and listening to blue grass country music. . He was very devoted to his family and home. He was a World War II veteran serving in France and Germany. He had a very deep appreciation of the United States of America and he was very proud to say, "I'm a member of the Greatest Generation." Ivyl is survived by his wife, Olive Jean Tarbell; three children, Darl (Greta) Tarbell of Centerville, Iowa; Kim (Shari) Tarbell of Overland Park, Kansas; and Robin (Jim) Thomas of Centerville, Iowa; five grandchildren, Amanda (Kyle) Merry of Centerville, Iowa; Nathaniel Tarbell of Des Moines, Iowa; Joshua Tarbell and Samuel Tarbell of Overland Park, Kansas; and Molly Thomas of Centerville, Iowa. Ivyl is also survived by two brothers, Delbert (Shirley) Tarbell of Bloomfield, Iowa; Loal (Jeannie) Tarbell of Centerville, Iowa; and four sisters, Florene Marlin of Davenport, Iowa; Veon (Raymond) Ferren of Centerville, Iowa; Valetta Jolly of Des Moines, Iowa; and Lorelda Frazier of Albia, Iowa, and two brother-in-laws, Howard (Joyce) Phillips of Mystic, Iowa; and Wendell (Dixie) Phillips of Hollister, Missouri and one sister-in-law, Mildred Tarbell of Melrose, Iowa. Ivyl is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Truman Tarbell and Mansel Tarbell; and two sisters, Truis Turner and Eva Doralee Tarbell. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Orville Marlin, Keith Frazier, Cleland Jolly and Robert Turner and his sister-in-laws, Mae Tarbell and Margaret Tarbell. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Centerville, Iowa, with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. Friends may call all day Monday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Lange Funeral Home in Centerville. Burial will be at the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church or Haines Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, IA 52544.
