Mary Underwood

Mary Underwood, age 99 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Tuesday evening, October 13, 2009 at The Continental Care Center in Seymour, Iowa. Mary was born the first child of Charles and Laura L. (Porter) Baughman born on Sept 26, 1910. She attended the Wells country school in the Chariton vicinity and graduated from the Unionville High School in 1929. She graduated from nurses training in January 1933 and worked at the Centerville Mercy Hospital for many years returning in 1982. She married Duane D. Underwood on December 16, 1933 and to this union one child was born, James Underwood. She was an avid seamstress and quilter and helped with the hospital auxiliary for many years. After her husbands death she traveled to several countries and various places in the U.S. Mary is survived by her son, James Porter Underwood and his wife Roma of Westwood, Kansas; granddaughter, Denise D. Underwood of Houston, Texas; a sister, Ruth Whitacre of Unionville, Missouri, Edward Baughman and his wife Kathryn of Centerville, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor officiating. Burial will follow at the Chariton Cemetery in Chariton, MO. A visitation will be held at the funeral home with family present from 12-2PM.
