in 1970, serving as treasurer for many years. He has been a long-term member of the Warren County Corvette Club. His greatest commitment to WCCC was planning the "Mystery Biscuit Run" for the club yearly since 1999. Larry enjoyed his 1966 Corvette, devoting many hours to its care and maintenance. He was an avid reader of automotive magazines, especially those pertaining to Corvettes. He experimented with wood working, including handmade pens, a grandfather clock, roll top desks for his sons, and a variety of projects. Larry also shared bicycle rides with his wife, occasionally joining RAGBRAI for a day. Larry and Ruth traveled extensively, visiting all fifty states and many foreign countries. Their favorite way to travel was by car. They have driven to the far corners of the United States and Canada: Northwest to Alaska, Southwest to California, Northeast to the Maritime Provinces, and Southeast to the Florida Keys. Larry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Schnepel Smith; two sons, Jason (Courtney) of Schaumburg, Illinois, and Jeffrey (Sherry) of West Des Moines; two grandchildren, Jacob and Natalie; his sisters Louise (George) Speers of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Marilyn (Leroy) Powell of Wellman, Iowa; and sister-in-law Marlys (William) Smith of Germantown, Tennessee. Larry was preceeded in death by his parents and his brother William. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
