the Vail United Presbyterian Church, on the board that built the new community building in Vail, and was also on the cemetery board. She was always one to keep moving and finding things to do whether it be working at The Observer, canning, gardening, or spending time with her family that she loved so dearly. One of her favorite activities was going to the grocery store. Cleone could talk to anyone and she knew at least one person wherever she went, and the grocery store was a great place to interact with people. With her job, family, and friends, Cleone also had many pictures. The number of photos Cleone has with people shows how loved she was by everyone she came in contact with. One of her biggest pet peeves, though, was having pictures on a phone and not a physical copy of them. In 2003 after 33 years at The Observer, Cleone retired but still kept attending social events with her friends and family.
On Saturday November 10, 2018, Cleone began her dance in Heaven as she passed away at her home in Vail at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Freddie Podey; brother, Wayne Schroeder; brother-in-law, Dale Jons; sister-in-law Phyllis Lundell and her husband Warren; and sister-in-law Lois Eckerman and her husband Gus.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Lyle Podey and his wife Sheryl of Westside, Iowa, Lucinda "Liz" Crichton and her husband Monte of Vail, Iowa, Sandra "Sam" Podey of Vail, Iowa, Roger Podey of Denison, Iowa, and Donna Buren and her husband Brad of Vail, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; her sister, Marilyn Jons of Manilla, Iowa; sister-in-law, Lila Schroeder of Manning, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
