It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph M. Egan announce his sudden passing on December 21, 2018 at Community Medical Center. Born in Elizabeth to Irish immigrant parents on October 26, 1945, he was the youngest of six children born to Mary Bonner & Michael Egan. John his brother was deceased as a toddler. Survived by his wife of 52 years Joan (nee Bialkowski). They were high school sweethearts who met at Sacred Heart H.S., Elizabeth and married in 1966 at Sacred Heart during his senior year at St. Peter's University, Jersey City. Joan remembers attending every Friday & Saturday night dance followed by pizza at Ben's Bar or Spirito's. High School days were spent "hanging out" at Rose Buds Soda Shop on Rt. 1 & 9 with their numerous friends. Joe excelled at basketball during his years at the "Heart" and was known for his two-handed set shot which would qualify for a 3 pointer now. After graduation from St. Pete's Joe was employed by the Division of Youth & Family Services for 25 yrs. (early retirement because of the effects of Lyme Disease). April 2018 a mother-daughter house was bought in Toms River of which he was so proud. With a wonderful new neighborhood he was seen painting, up on the ladder or working on the landscape. He was also employed for the last 13 years as a greeter for Pine Belt Subaru of Lakewood, NJ. He was a dedicated employee and was well liked by his co-workers. A more kind and gentle soul could not be found. He loved his wife, family, children and grandchildren with his entire being and leaves them and his friends with broken hearts. He left this earth with his greatest gift of being able to be a donor for those suffering and in need. Joe & Joan were parent-chaperones for the Windjammers Drum Corps. Brick, NJ for many years and traveled the byways of NJ, NY, CN, & PA. Joe is also survived by his beloved children Shaun Egan, Toms River and Rebecca Egan-Nunez, Toms River, and his 5 grandchildren, Kathryn "Katie" Shaw (Andrew), Kelly Egan, and Shane Egan, , Jared Egan and Ramon Nunez. Surviving are his brother James Egan (Joan deceased) of Dallas, TX, sister Kathleen (Richard deceased) Mihalkovitz of Bayville, NJ, sister Mary & husband John Borkowski of Midlothian, VA and sister Patricia (James deceased) Bunk of Dallas, TX and numerous nieces & nephews. A celebration of life will be held at Horizon Funeral and Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River on Saturday, December 29 from 2 to 4 pm and a repast to follow.
