Jimmie "Jim" Lavon Bence, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Countryside Manor in Anderson. Jimmie was born on January 2, 1931 in Lanett, Alabama to Early and Eunice Bence.
Jimmie had a true heart to serve, joining the United States Army as a teenager and serving for several years, fighting bravely in the Korean War. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
After serving his country, Jimmie went to work at Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis, retiring after 32 years. Jim served his community as an active member and the Fire Chief for many years of the Kennard Volunteer Fire Department, he also attended the Kennard Friends Church.
Jim is survived by his wife of 28 years Eugenia; his children Susan (Tom) McCormick, Bob (Durleece) Bence; and Carol (Reed) Whitesel; stepsons Ted, Larry and Leonard Hopkins; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, his first wife Betty Bence of 38 years; grandson Joshua Whitesel; stepson's Timothy and John Hopkins.
Jim had a very kind heart and a sweet sprit and is now safe in his heavenly home.
