Dr. August P. Lemberger

Madison - Dr. August P."Gus" Lemberger, age 84 was called home to the Lord on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at St. Mary's hospital with family members at his side.   Gus was born January 25, 1926 in Milwaukee, WI. He was the son of Max N. and Cecilia (nee Gehl) Lemberger.   Gus attended and graduated from Marquette High School, Milwaukee, WI in 1943. Following in his father's footsteps, he pursued a career in pharmacy attending the University of Wisconsin and receiving both his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacy. The family is proud to say that Gus was one of the University of Wisconsin's first male cheerleaders, and was a Badger fan through and through.   He served in the U. S. Army during WWII from 1944-1946 and was stationed in Japan, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.   On June 30, 1947 he married the love of his life, Charlyne Ann Young in Sparta, WI and they raised seven children.  Gus loved his family dearly and was very proud of each and every one of them. and had a great sense of humor.   Gus was a member of the Pharmacy School Faculty at the University of Wisconsin from 1953 to 1969; then served as dean at the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Pharmacy 1969 to 1980 when he returned to University of Wisconsin-Madison as dean of Pharmacy. He retired in 1991.  He held numerous professional appointments and positions, including his term on the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, and his Chairmanship of the Joint AACP-AFPE commission to Study Graduate Education in the Pharmaceutical Sciences.   Among the many honors Gus received during his professional career are the University of Wisconsin Kiekhofer Memorial Teaching Award (1957), the Rho Chi Lecture Award (1988), selection as the first Takeru and Aya Higuchi Memorial Lecturer by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Japan (1989) and the Distinguished Service Profile Award of the AFPE (1990).   In his spare time, Gus was an avid golfer and bowler, approaching both sports with a competitive zeal. He enjoyed reading, playing bridge, puzzles of all types, and spending time with family and friends. Although undocumented, he rarely lost a game of Pig' at the family dinner table.   He loved his sweetsespecially Babcock ice cream.   He was a member of St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Blackhawk Country Club, American Pharmaceutical Association, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association, Rho Chi, Sigma Xi, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Sigma, Kappa Psi, Phi Delta Chi and Alpha Chi Sigma.     He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Charlyne , and their  seven children, Dr. Michael (Roseann) Lemberger of Spokane, WA, Mary (Roger) Wright of Madison, WI, Dr. Thomas (Ellen) Lemberger of Worthington, OH,  Dr. Terrence (Lisa) Lemberger of Verona, WI, Ann (Frederick) Kasten of Madison, WI, Kathryn (Dennis) O'Keefe of Park City, UT, and  Peter (Amy) Lemberger of Madison, WI, as well as 12 grandchildren, Andrew and Kevin Lemberger, Michael, Matthew (Jessica) and Timothy Williams, Adrienne and Benjamin Lemberger, Brian and Erin O'Keefe, Megan, Jackson and Haley Lemberger and 2 great-grand children, Jack and Alexa Williams. He is further survived by his two sisters Esther (Albert) Weitekamp, Cecilia (Patrick) Hawley, and sister-in-law Helen (Max) Lemberger.   He was preceded in death by his father, Max N. Lemberger, his mother, Cecilia Gehl Lemberger, and two brothers, Anthony Lemberger and Max Lemberger.   A Mass of Christian burial will be held at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison, on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignor Donn Heiar presiding.   A visitation will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Rd., on Sunday, February 21, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at the church on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be made to St Thomas Aquinas Church, the UW Foundation c/o August and Charlyne Lemberger Fund or the charity of your choice.   The family would like to extend a special thanks to his doctors and staff at St. Mary's Hospital for all the care and compassion extended to Gus and his family.
