William "Bill" Raymond Maher, 69, of Baxter, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 31, 2019. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at Restland Cemetery in Baxter with Merle Smith officiating. A gathering to celebrate Bill's life will follow at his house at 411 Independence Street, Baxter, Iowa. Bill was born on January 15, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa to Pat and Betty (Gilreath) Maher. He grew up in Mingo and graduated from Mingo High School with the class of 1968. Following school, he became a Volkswagen mechanic and worked for a few companies prior to begin working for Jasper County. Bill married Paula Bucklin on November 6, 1971 in Colfax. The couple resided in Mingo until moving to Baxter in 1977. Bill remained working for Jasper County Highway Department where he became the shop foreman. In 2011, after more than 30 years he retired from the county. Bill was a member of the Baxter Men's Club. He enjoyed spending time with family, helping others in need, fishing, reading, tinkering in his garage, and drinking beer with his buddies. Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife Paula Maher; children Bryan (Becky) Maher, and Brenna (Michael) Burkle; grandchildren Hayden, Emma, Leah, and Tristan; siblings Jeanne (Al) Conover, John (Jodi) Maher, Frank (Lynette) Maher; nieces and nephews; and many close friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gerald Rinehart, Jim Maher, and Chuck Maher; and sister Mary Kay Jones. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Unity Point Hospice. Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care, in Baxter, has been entrusted with the care of Bill and his family.
