Lewis "Jack" Steindler

Lewis "Jack" Steindler, age 96 of Tucson AZ, passed away peacefully late Thursday night May 30 in the presence of his wife, Irene, and other family members.

Jack was born in Muskegon MI on May 22, 1923. He graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1940 and then went to the University of Alabama. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. After returning to Muskegon, he married Irene Darmstadter in a ceremony at the Occidental Hotel on August 24, 1946. They were married for a remarkable 72 years. At the same time, Jack joined Steindler Paper Company which had been founded by his grandfather in 1882. Jack eventually succeeded his father Milton as President of Steindler Paper. Jack retired in 1985 due to health issues and moved with Irene to Tucson.

Jack was active in many Jewish organizations and activities throughout his life. He was a member of Temple B'nai Israel in Muskegon and later Temple Emanu-El in Tucson. Jack was also involved in supporting the Muskegon YMCA and was a Rotarian too.

s death. He was instrumental in obtaining Rotary support for a homeless shelter in Tucson named Primavera where Jack worked as a volunteer for many years. In Tucson he was also a volunteer for SCORE and Humane Borders.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Frances Steindler, his sister Carol who died at age 10, and brother Bernard who passed away on his 21st birthday. He is survived by his wife Irene and three children: Mike (and wife Brenda) of Waxahachie TX, Carol Miller (and husband David) of Highland Park, IL, and Bart (and wife Kathy) of Grand Rapids, MI. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who called him Papa Jack (except for one grandchild and her two children to whom he was Lewis)

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 7th at 10:30 am in Muskegon's Mona View Cemetery.

Carol and David Miller will be observing Shiva at their home in Highland Park, Illinois during the following times:

Tuesday, June 11 and Wednesday June 12, 3:00 - 5:00 and 6:30 - 8:30.
