Marvis ThomasFebruary 4, 1924 - February 28, 2011Marvis Smith Thomas passed away on February 28, 2011, at the age of 87. Born on February 4, 1924, in Letcher, South Dakota, to Winfred and Caroline Smith, Marvis grew up in Kansas City. She married Bernard Thomas in 1944. Together they operated a traveling carnival, the Thomas Shows, for over four decades. They made their home in Lennox, South Dakota, for nearly 35 years before moving to the Onion Creek community in Austin, Texas, in 1978. Marvis was predeceased by husband Bernard in 2007, brother, Leon Smith, and sister, Pauline Morton. She is survived by her three daughters and their families: Deanna and Ross Payne, Margaret and Tom Atkins, and Carolyn and John Hanschen, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Marvis enjoyed her family, art, reading, antiques, traveling, current events, and the television show Jeopardy. She was loving and considerate, and always concerned about the welfare of her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 409 West Ben White Boulevard, Austin, Texas, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2011.
