Jerry Carr

Jerry Carr, age 66, passed away Monday, June 24, 2019, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from lung cancer. He was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, on August, 12, 1952, to Bernard and Lillian Carr of Albia, Iowa. He was officially named Gerald Francis Carr, but always went by Jerry. We knew if someone called him Gerald they really didn't know him. Jerry spent his childhood in Albia, Iowa, and graduated from ACHS in 1970. He continued his education at Northeast Missouri State which is now Truman University in Kirksville, Missouri, and graduated in 1974 with a degree in Criminal Justice. Jerry spent 5 years working in the state government for the Department of Consumer Protection and then spent the rest of his career working as an insurance adjuster for American Family Insurance. Most recently in retirement, he delivered flowers and groceries for Hy-Vee and drove and relocated cars for Enterprise Car Rental. Jerry was an avid sports fan. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and the Southeast Polk Rams. He and his wife received the Southeast Polk Super Fan award in 1989 and again he received the outstanding fan award at the Iowa Girls' State Basketball Tournament in 2018. H...[more]

He also spent several years running the chains at the Southeast Polk boys' football games and running the clock for boys and girls basketball games. He was a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church for 38 years, served in numerous church leadership roles, sang in the choir, and played church softball. For many years he organized and bowled on an American Insurance Bowling team. He was active in the Altoona Lions Club and held many leadership positions in that organization and twice received the Warren Coleman Honorary Award for his dedicated service. He and his family spent many hours manning the Spin Art Booth at the Iowa State Fair and other locations. His cat Ellie will miss him as well as his precious grandsons, Nile and Hudson, that he loved immensely and enjoyed intensely. Jerry is survived by his loving wife and partner of 43 years, Marla Carr. They were high school sweethearts that were blessed by their sons Bryan and Eric. Surviving are Bryan Carr, Eric Carr and wife, Michelle and grandsons, Nile and Hudson. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Donna Carr and a niece, Deb Powers and a nephew, Pat Carr, along with two great-nephews, Logan and Connor Powers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Lillian Carr, and brother, Denny Carr. He will be missed by many family members and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, from 5 to 7, and his Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 on Saturday, June 29. Both services will be held at the Altoona United Methodist Church in Altoona, Iowa. Please feel free to wear your Black and Gold to honor the Hawkeyes and the Southeast Polk Rams and remember Jerry.
