Following retirement from teaching, Don began working at Kreg Tool Company in Huxley where he wore a variety of hats including machinist, product demonstrator and customer service representative. He retired from Kreg Tool in 2007. Don was always an avid woodworker and fisherman. He enjoyed creating projects for his children and grandchildren as well as teaching them the finer points of fishing. Yearly family vacations at Lake Kabekona in Minnesota, since the age of three, provided countless memories. Don was always up for an adventure and during their retirement years he and Shir enjoyed traveling to various destinations around the country. Don was always interested in civic affairs and served in several capacities. He served three terms on the Story County Planning and Zoning Board, four separate terms as a member of the Huxley City Council, a member of Governor Ray's Blue Ribbon Committee to improve recruitment and retention in the Iowa National Guard, and several terms on the board of the Huxley Development Corporation. Don was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kelley. Over the years, he served on the church council, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirlene; his children Kathlene (Steve) Pietsch; their children Rachel and Conner; Linda (Jonpaul) Sauer, their children Porter and Brenden, and Eric (Fia) and their children, Cullin and Erica.
