John VerHoef

John R. VerHoef, 79, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019. He was born on May 19, 1940 in Pipestone, MN to John M. and Amelia VerHoef.  He was a graduate of Iowa State University and served 4 years in the United States Air Force. He retired as an engineer from PDM Steel after starting his career there in 1959.  He was on the Johnston Chamber of Commerce and served as Mayor for Johnston from 1994 to 1998.  He was also on the Williamson County School Board in Brentwood, TN; former President of the Johnston Lion's Club; former Co-Chair for the United Way of Central Iowa,  a Master Gardener in Brentwood and Des Moines; and a member of Rotary Club of Des Moines and Brentwood.  In 1995, he was recognized with the distinguished Governor's Volunteer Award.

Some of his favorite times were watching the Iowa State Cyclones, St. Louis Cardinals, and Dallas Cowboys. He loved to travel, spend time with family and friends, and sit outside in his backyard to watch the wildlife.

; brother James (Judi); and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews that all affectionately referred to him as "Uncle John".

Family, friends, and others whose lives John touches are invited to the Merle Hay Funeral Home from 4pm to 7pm, Tuesday August, 20, 2019. There will be a private ceremony at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's name to the City of Johnston's Police and Fire/Rescue Departments.
