Fred Mohlenkamp

Fred Clarence Mohlenkamp was born on December 26, 1910, near Ashton, Iowa to the late John and Cena (Gastman) Mohlenkamp. He received his schooling in country school in rural Mt. Lake. On November 29, 1933, Fred was united in marriage to Martha Kirkman at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. This marriage was blessed with two children, Doris and Gary. In 1935, they moved from Bingham Lake to Windom. For forty-eight years, Fred was a truck driver for many years for Werner Milling in Windom and then for the Cottonwood County Highway Department until retiring in 1967 after forty years of dedicated service. After retiring, Fred and Martha continued to live in Windom and wintered in Arizona for twenty-five years. While in Arizona, Fred played in the MN 5 band and climbed Mt. Superstition several times with last time being at the age of 90. On November 1, 2007, Martha passed away. After her death, Fred continued to live in his home. Recently, Fred became suddenly ill and was taken to the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the wonderful age of 97. Fred will be remembered for many things in life including his enjoyment of fishing and hunting, bowling, pool, horse shoes, riding motorcycle, being a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and most of all, for being a wonderful father and grandpa who loved and enjoyed his family dearly. Fred is survived by his two children, Doris Edwards and her husband, Norman of Anoka; Gary Mohlenkamp and his wife, Gail of Ogema; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Fred is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha Mohlenkamp; two brothers, John and LeRoy Mohlencamp; and one sister, Florence Larson.
