Phyllis Burrus, 81, of Keokuk, died at 7:05 PM on Monday, December 13, 2010, at Lexington Square in Keokuk. She was born June 23, 1929, in Keokuk, Ia., the daughter of Frank G. and Louise Sells Dose. She was the oldest of 2 siblings. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1947. On November 14, 1947, she married Claude J. Burrus, in Keokuk. Phyllis was employed by Hubinger Company Credit Union and Keokuk Water Works, Keokuk, where she found joy in her everyday work. Phyllis enjoyed oil and acrylic painting. She was an artistic contributor to Christmas in the Park. She also enjoyed sea shell décor and showcased her ornate ocean creations in such stores as Halls at Crown Center, Kansas City, Mo. and Fireside at the Country Club Plaza, Kansas City. Phyllis was a member of St. Paul's Church, the V.F.W. Auxillary, and the Iowa Art Club. She is survived by her daughters, Janice Taylor, of Overland Park, Kans., and Judith McLaren, of Overland Park, Kans.; her son and daughter-in-law, George and Nancy Burrus of Houston, Texas; and her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Karen Burrus, of Medford, Oregon. preceded in life by her husband, Claude, and her grandson, Monte. Her wise, compassionate, giving, and loving ways will live with our memories through a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Visitation will be Friday, May 20, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center on Blondeau with family meeting friends. A celebration of her life will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Keokuk National Cemetery with Rev. Geoffrey Mitchell officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 Street Jude Place, Memphis, TN., 38105 and the Keokuk Humane Society.
