Hazel C. Schmitt, 92, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away June 10, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa. She was born March 2, 1919, in rural Sheffield, Iowa, to Julius and Emily (Wiele) Liekweg. Hazel attended rural schools and later graduated from the Sheffield High School. She attended college at Upper Iowa University in Fayette and then the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Hazel taught school in the rural areas. She was united in marriage to Harold Schmitt in 1944. They farmed north of Hampton until Harold passed away on December 21, 1975. After a few years Hazel moved to Hampton. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton. Hazel is survived by her sister Gladys (Darrell) Amendt of Hampton, nephew Duane (Janiece) Liekweg of Urbandale, great Nephew Scot (Patty) Liekweg and their son of Rippey, great niece Robin (Matt) Blythe and their two sons of Williamsburg, great niece Dawn Liekweg of Urbandale and brother-in-law Wayne (Mary) Schmitt of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold and brother George Liekweg.
