George Macort, age 90, an Ambler resident for 83 years, died Friday, June 10, 2011 in the Abington Hospice at Warminster. Born in Smyrna, DE, he was the son of the late James and Carrie (nee Roatch) Macort. Mr. Macort was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen C. (nee Carfrey) Macort in 2005. He was also preceded in death by brothers John, James, and William Macort, and sisters, Helen Downey, Mary Mac Farland, Ida Lawrence, Margaret Hoff, and Besse Kolb. He was a Steel Worker for 40 years, employed by Cruse-Kemper Company in Ambler, De Laval of Trenton, NJ, he returned to Ambler working for the Boiler Erection Company and Ambler Boro until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Macort was a graduate of the Ambler High School Class of 1939. He was very athletic playing Basketball and Football. He earned the All Bux Mont Honors and the Maxwell Award for Football, and was inducted into the Ambler/Wissahickon High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. George joined the Wissahickon Fire Company in 1945. He was a Life Active Member and served as Fire Chief from 1955 to 1959, and 1963 to 1964. the Wissahickon Athletic Club and served on the Ambler Borough Recreation Board. Mr. Macort was the devoted father of George Macort, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Lansdale, Kathleen A. Wandall of Ambler, and Barry Macort and his wife Colette of Ambler. He was the loving grandfather of Ron and Karen Macort, Joan Macort, Rusty and Marian Wandall, and Shannon and Kimberly Macort, and the great grandfather of Ron Macort, Jennifer Macort, Kristine Macort, and Geoffrey Horwitz. He is also survived by his sister Carrie Chiriano of Lansdale. Relative and Friends are invite to call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, June 24, 2011 and from 9:00 to 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Anton B. Urban Funeral Home,1111 S. Bethlehem Pike, Ambler, A Funeral Service will be officiate by Rev. John Macort at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Prospectville.
