Donald Castle Austin

Austin, Donald Castle, M.D. passed away April 29, 2018. Dr. Austin, a former Grosse Pointe resident, practiced medicine in the Detroit area for over 50 years. He served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Hutzel Hospital then at The Detroit Medical Center, served as active staff at Children's Hospital, Veteran's Hospital, Karmanos Cancer Center, and served as a consultant at many other area Hospitals. Dr. Austin served as a Clinical Professor in Neurosurgery at Wayne State University. Don and his late wife, Dale (Wallace), were active in many philanthropic projects. They supported The Salvation Army, Michigan Opera Theater, Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Detroit Historical Museum. A favorite annual activity was to support the Parade Company and participate in the Thanksgiving Day Parade as "Distinguished Clowns". Dr. Austin was an active writer and had a full portfolio of professional publications. He also enjoyed writing fiction and published a whole series of books with a wide range of topics. Three sisters-in-law Anna Rae (Edward), Lois (Bug), Bonnie Mae (Billy) and Brother-in-law Morris Lee (Sally). Niece Sondra (Sonnie) Souve and other extended family. Don's wish was to be remembered for good times shared together.
