Joan Bostick Griffey, age 79, of Fountain City, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, following a brief illness. Joan was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and faithful member of Fountain City United Methodist Church for over 43 years, member of United Methodist Women and was loved by all for her servant's heart. She will also be remembered for her hard work: a former Knox County school teacher at both Carter High School and Sterchi Elementary, she served as the secretary, treasurer and co-owner of Gentry Griffey Chapel for many years with her husband, Jerry, and leaves a legacy of volunteering her time and talents to many community organizations. The ones dearest to her heart include the UMW and the Scroggie Foundation. A favorite hobby was cheering on the Lady Vols. She was preceded in death by her parents, P.M. and Ruth Bostick, sister, Dorothy Parker, and niece, Laura Parker Carter. Joan is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jerry J. Griffey; daughters, Karen Griffey Todd and husband Mike, of Kingsport, Tennessee, Becky Griffey Ripley and husband Ed; grandchildren, Ethan and Katie Todd, and Will and Anna Ripley; brother, Rev. e Phyllis; sisters-in-law, Margaret Griffey Worley and Charlotte Griffey Kolbe; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; a host of extended family and friends she cherished; and her special dog, Barney. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 13th from 5-6:45 pm at Fountain City United Methodist Church. The Funeral Service will begin at 7 pm, with Rev. Dr. Randy Frye, Rev. Daniel Ogle, Rev. Amy Aycock and Rev. Gregg Bostick officiating.  A Graveside Service will be conducted at Asbury Cemetery on Saturday at 11 am, with Rev. Jim Whedbee and Rev. Doug Smith officiating. Pallbearers will be the current and former staff of Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Christian Homebuilders Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women, and the Funeral Professionals of Tennessee.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Fountain City United Methodist Church- Missions of United Methodist Women, to benefit the Wesley House, or to the Fountain City Ministry Center.
