Walter Daniel Bortko, 83, passed away on January 1, 2019 in Glendale, Arizona after a lengthy illness. He was married to Amalia (nee Amann) Bortko for 55 years. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Bruno and Magdalena Bortko. After serving in the United States Marine Corps in Korea, he attended North Carolina State University, where he was a member of the men's basketball team. He returned home to Chicago and joined the Chicago Police department, where he served until his retirement in 1988. He then traveled the US extensively and relocated to Las Vegas, where he lived until his recent illness. He was an active member of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Chicago and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Las Vegas. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he enjoyed cheering for his Chicago sports teams, as well as watching college basketball and football. Known for his corny jokes and quick wit, he always made others feel welcome. He is survived by his wife, Amalia, and children Stephanie Bortko (John Holz, Jr.) and Daniel Bortko (Mary Jane Wright) and granddaughter Faith Bortko.
