Carlyle L. “Jack” Shady age 91 of Maquoketa Iowa died on Saturday evening October 32009.0 at the Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa Iowa.


A celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday October 72009.0 from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 12 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. service time on Wednesday October 72009.0 from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa Iowa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery Maquoketa Iowa where military rites will be accorded.


Carlyle L. “Jack” Shady was born on April 28 1918 in rural Jackson County Iowa to Robert Shady and Bertha (Durkop) Shady. He was educated in the Esgate and rural Jackson County country schools. He was a World War II veteran of the Army. He married Velma V. Collins Riley in 1948 in Maquoketa Iowa. She preceded him in death on January 21 2004.

r Carl Operman Trucking making cement blocks in many local buildings. He also worked as a bartender for Carl Operman and later for Harry Hauger’s Sportsman’s Bar. Jack’s main interest though was farming.  He farmed the Jim Marousis farm for 20 years until purchasing the Hank Merrick farm in 1968. He farmed on his own until the last few years



Jack was a member of the First Lutheran Church Jackson County Farm Bureau Maquoketa American Legion Post #75 and the Maquoketa VFW Post #3633 O’Connor-Regenwether. He had served on the school board when his children attended the Hurstville School.


In his early years Jack enjoyed playing baseball. He was an avid bowler. He also loved to raise and hunt with his fox hounds. Farming was his life.


Jack is survived by his children Dianna (Eugene) Block of Maquoketa IA Linda (Riley) and her husband Joe Bullock of Maquoketa IA Herbert and his wife Phyllis Riley of Bloomington IN Janet (Riley) and her husband Joe Rollinger of Maquoketa IA and Lawrence and his wife Sheryle Riley of Maquoketa IA; 13 grandchildren & 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents his wife 3 brothers Elmer Earl and Clayton 2 sisters Maxine Rockwell and Geraldine Morehead and 3 grandchildren Kelly Block-Davidson Lori Riley and Michael McMullin.


In lieu of other expressions of sympathy a Carlyle L. “Jack” Shady memorial fund has been established.
