Lawrence Jay Klaus, 78, of Sands Township, died Saturday evening, June 13, 2015, at the D.J Jacobetti Home for Veterans while also under the care of Lake Superior Hospice. Larry was born February 2, 1937, in Antigo, Wisconsin, a son of the late Gustaf and Pearl Hansen Klaus. He graduated from Green Bay East High School and attended NMU and Bay De Noc Community College. He also served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1960. Larry married Margaret A. "Peg" LaValley on October 4, 1968 in Marquette and she preceded him in death on October 23, 2009. He worked as a Marquette City police officer for many years and had operated his own business, Larry's Small Engine Repair. Larry was very involved in service to the community. He had been a member of the Chocolay Lions Club since 1973 and served as district governor from 1986 to 1987, club secretary for 30 years, president, vice president and was on many of their committees. He also served on the board of directors at Eversight Michigan, formerly Michigan Eye Bank and Teaching Family Homes. He is survived by his children, Robin B. (Samantha Kukla) Reed of Sands, Christopher (Judy) Klaus of Grand Forks, ND, Kevin (Laura) Klaus of East Hampton, NJ, Lisa (Ronald) Wilson of Easton, PA and Laura (Guy) Baggerly of Port Murray, NJ; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. James Duehring officiating. Interment will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at 12 Noon at the Sands Township Cemetery where military honors will be provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund, 425 Fisher Street, Marquette, MI 49855 or Teaching Family Homes, 1000 Silver Creek Road, Marquette, MI 49855.
