RICHARD K. (MIKE) GORSKI

Richard K. "Mike" Gorski, 92, of Marquette, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 6, 2015 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living under the care of Lake Superior Hospice. Mike was born on April 20, 1923 at Green Bay, Wisconsin, a son of the late John and Martha (Kenney) Gorski. He proudly served his country during World War II where he was a decorated U.S. Army veteran. He received a Purple Heart due to combat injuries he sustained and also the Bronze Star for bravery. After the war, Mike pursued his education and ultimately received a Master's Degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He held many positions of employment, two most notably being at the Chicago Teacher's College and at Northern Michigan University where he was Professor and Head of the Art and Design Department from 1965-1975, retiring from teaching Graphic Communications in 1993 as Professor Emeritus. During his tenure as department head, he expanded the scope of the program by introducing new Art and Design studio disciplines, curriculum, and facilities, and in 1972 directed the implementation of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. ainter who enjoyed producing art work in a variety of media. In his free time, he enjoyed going for long walks with his favorite canine companions. He is survived by two sons, Nicholas (Wendy) Gorski of Stillwater, MN and Jason (Rachel) Gorski of St. Paul, MN, two grandchildren, Samuel (Sarah) Gorski of Los Angeles, CA and Miranda Gorski of Portland, OR; also a sister-in-law, Harriet Gorski of Middleton, WI as well as numerous cousins. Preceding him in death besides his parents was his wife, Marilyn Gorski on April 13, 2015 and a brother, Jack Gorski. A memorial service will take place next summer at NMU with the date and time to be announced later.
