Mrs. Betty Byrum, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She was born in Des Moines, IA on November 14, 1925, to Edward Clarence and Maver Grace Robinson Marshall and was raised by her foster parents, Phil and Mary Westerbeck of New London. On February 7, 1945, in Hampton, Virginia, she married Carl Lucas Byrum who survives her. Mrs. Byrum was a graduate of New London High School, and a member of the United Methodist Church and the Women of the Moose, both of Mt. Pleasant. She was a secretary for the Spahn and Rose Lumber Company in New London, the Farm Bureau in Mt. Pleasant and the Iowa Revenue Service in Burlington. She enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, dancing, watching the hummingbirds, her beloved grandchildren and wintering in Arizona with her husband. She is survived by her husband, Carl of Mt. Pleasant; one son, Mike and his wife Carolyn of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Cherie Byrum of Mt. Union; eight grandchildren, Todd, Heather, Carlee, Nathan, Shane, Chris, Brandon and Jaron; great-grandchildren, Zach, Beth, Sara, Jacob, Patrick, Olivia, Madison, Miles, Eric, Gabe, Mya and Maciah; and one sister, Bonnie Marshall of Te...[more]

. She was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents; one son, Phil; brothers, Ed, Buck and Duane; and sisters, Phyliss, Margaret, JoAnn, Mona, Joy and MaryLou. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 29, 2010, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Rev. Herbert Shafer will officiate. Inurnment of her cremains will be held privately in Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Iowa City.
