Cyril "Cy" Thomas Butler, son of John Eugene and Sarah Jane (Quirk) Butler, was born on June 26, 1925, in Jefferson, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson. Cy attended Jefferson schools and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1943. On July 20, 1945, Cy married Beverly Doreen Gunion in Jefferson.
Cy first worked for area farmers, and then for Friendly Foods Stores and Square Deal Grocery Stores for Ouren Goodrich. In 1960, Mr. Goodrich transferred the Butler family to Harlan, Iowa, where Cy served as the meat manager for Goodrich Grocery Store (later known as Olson's Grocery Store). Following the grocery store's closing, he was employed as a meat cutter at Jim's Wholesale Meats in Harlan. Cy later worked for Darwin Larsen at the Car Connection in Harlan.
Cy's wonderful sense of humor showed through his sharing of smiles and jokes. Known to many as "The Candy Man", Cy was often seen walking around Harlan with his small dog, "Tina", handing out candy. Cyril "Cy" T. Butler died on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at his home in Harlan, Iowa. He had reached the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
Cy was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister, Mary Louise Butler; one brother-in-law, Robert Reinsch; one grandson, Adam Rold; one great-grandson, Jason Hald; one great-granddaughter, Charley Falkena; and one great-great-granddaughter, Paisley Rief. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Beverly Butler; five children, Sharon (Significant Other, John Ohlinger) Blum of Woodbine, Iowa, Pamela (Lawrence) Rold of Harlan, Iowa, Connie (Woody) De Forest of Woodbine, Iowa, Tom (Diane) Butler of Harlan, Iowa, and Scott (Significant Other, Linda Stuhr) Butler of Harlan, Iowa; one sister, Margaret Ann Reinsch of Lincoln, Nebraska; 18 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
A graveside service and burial was held on Monday, May 11, 2020, at the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Hank Gruver led the service. Cy's loving grandsons and granddaughters served as casket bearers. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
