John L. DeBruyn, age 95 formerly of Colfax passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at his daughters home in Altoona. Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at McKeever Cemetery near Colfax. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Memorials may be directed to the family to and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com The son of Harry and Mildred (Smith) DeBruyn, John was born on April 23, 1925 in Prairie City, Iowa. He attended school in Prairie City and had to leave after the 10th grade to help on the family farm. John served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was involved in "Operation Crossroads" in the Marshall Islands, (Bikini Island) and on the ship Mt. McKiney. This is where they tested the atomic bomb. John was united in marriage to Carol Newell in 1950. She passed away in 1992. He later married Agnes in 2004. He farmed in the area for over 50 years. John loved to travel. Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Diane (Dave) Tingle; his wife Agnes; two grandchildren, Michele (Richie) Snyder and Rusty (Amy) Tingle; great grandchildren, Madison, Charlie, Trey, Isaac, Conner and Hunter; two sisters, Marjorie Reddick and Wanda Lee Henley and many nieces and nephews. Preceding John in death were his parents, first wife, Carol; brother, Harry Raymond DeBruyn; his nephew, Michael Reddick and brothers-in-law, Richard Reddick and Robert Henley.
