Dorothy Isabelle Cronin

Dorothy was born on August 13, 1923, in State Line, PA to Beulah and Alton Beard, and lived there and in Hagerstown, MD until moving with her family to Washington, DC in the early 1930's. She attended Washington, DC schools, graduating from McKinley Tech High School in 1941. Dorothy married James Scramlin on December 26, 1941. She became a Gold Star Wife with a 20-month-old Gold Star Daughter, when his US Army Air Corps B-24 bomber was shot down over Italy on April 27, 1945, less than two weeks before end of World War II in Europe.

After the war, Dorothy held various positions with the US Government, including the US Post Office, where she met Thomas Cronin. They were married on November 3, 1951, and they had one daughter. "Tommy" continued to work for the Post Office until retirement. Dorothy attended "Cosmetology School", eventually becoming a very successful beauty salon owner/operator. Along the way, they raised two daughters. They lived in the Maryland DC suburbs until retiring back to her beloved Pennsylvania in 1971. to family. Dorothy's happiest times were those spent with her family. Much of her retirement was spent breeding and raising Purple Martins and Blue Birds, adding hundreds to their populations. She was a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins and Washington Senators, even after they became the Texas Rangers! Dorothy and "Tommy" were married less than a month shy of 55 years at his passing on October 24, 2006. They led a very full life, before and after retirement.

In addition to her husbands and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by an infant brother, sister Fay Zesserman, brother Robert Beard and granddaughter Valerie Wiley Smith.

She is survived by daughter, Fay Scramlin of Crowley, daughter, Karen Cannon and husband, Jim of Burleson and brother, Alton Beard and wife, Donna of Lanham, MD. She is also survived by five granddaughters, four grandsons-in-law, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all.
