work as a carpenter, and also for the Olin Matheson Chemical Plant for 10 years. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army, and served as a construction engineer with the 805th Engineers. He was stationed in the South Pacific, where he constructed airfields until 1945. After leaving the Army, he then went to work for the West Virginia Newspaper Publishing Company where he retired as their Maintenance Supervisor with 26 years of service.Mr. Fleming attended Goshen Baptist Church and Suncrest United Methodist Church (formerly Drummond Chapel). He was a longtime member of the Suncrest Kiwanis Club beginning in 1995. He volunteered time with the Boy Scouts at Camp Mountaineer, the American Red Cross, Meals on wheels, Terrific Kids, and Special Olympics. He enjoyed fishing, wood working and spending time with his family, telling stories and just being the kind and loving man that he was.Known by many affectionately as "Smitty" or "Great Pap", he was a gentle and loving man who loved his faith in the Lord and is now at peace having lived 98 wonderful years.We will love and miss you forever, Pap!Friends may join the family to honor Smitty's life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Morgantown on Monday, October 24, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM and again on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating.
