Rusty was born on May 9, 1943 to Martin and Lena (Werlinger) Gabel in Shakopee, Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Beatrice Stone in 1964 and they later divorced. He then married Fran Childers. He retired from Sears Manufacturing after 38 years of service. Rusty loved his job and took great pride in his work there as a machinist, especially his "government" jobs in between his "plant tours".

Those missing him greatly are his loving wife of 26 years, Fran Gabel; children: Mary Gabel of Davenport, Brenda (Kevin Pingel) Gabel of Bettendorf, Rusty (Melissa Hill) Gabel of Davenport, Michele (Rick) Percy of Moline, and Jason Gabel of Bettendorf; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; siblings: Jan Mosset of Des Moines, Mary J.
