Clarence Andrew Berning, son of Leo and Frances (Jasper) Berning was born February 23, 1934 in Breda, Iowa. He grew up on his family farm in Breda and attended St Bernard Elementary and St Bernard High School.  His favorite pastime in high school was playing baseball. Upon graduation Clarence volunteered to serve his country as a member of the US Army.  From 1955 to 1957 Clarence served with the U.S. Army as a personnel specialist. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Carroll County.

On November 15, 1958 Clarence was united in marriage with Marcella ‘Sally’ Theresa Schmitz at Dedham. They were married for more than 51 years. They farmed near Breda for approximately ten years before settling in Carroll where he worked as a police dispatcher for 25 years until his retirement.  Clarence and Sally were blessed with four sons and two daughters.

Clarence was a member of Holy Spirit Church and the American Legion.  In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing with his children at Wall Lake and Swan Lake. He was an avid fan of the St Louis Cardinals baseball team and listening to the music of Johnny Cash.

His wife Sally passed away on September 24, 2009 and Clarence continued to live in their home in Carroll until he became ill. Clarence died of natural causes at Accura Healthcare Center on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the age of 85 years and 1 day.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Frances Berning; wife Sally Berning; sisters Rita Wuebker, Lois Hoffman and Lorraine Gehling.
