Catherine "Kay" H. (Tonry) Poirier passed away peacefully at Brigham and Women's Hospital at the age of 82. Kay, formally of Taunton, lived in Raynham for the past 52 years. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years Norman C. Poirier, and her three children Charles Poirier (Marilee), Sandra Poirier Smith (Daniel Smith) and Daniel Poirier. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Katie and Eric Diaz, Joseph Poirier, Jeanne Poirier, and Robin and Alexander Smith, her brother Edward Tonry, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Edward W. and Sandra Tonry, and her sister Claire Dalaker. In 1956, Kay graduated from St. Mary's High School in Taunton. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Bridgewater State College. In 1974, Kay was the founding director of Birthright of Greater Taunton where she remained active for 40 plus years. At Saint Ann's Church in Raynham, she served this community in countless ways including visiting the sick as a eucharist minister, religious education teacher and coordinator, leading fundraising efforts, and organizing social events. Whether distributing formula, diapers, baby and maternity clothing, and related supplies, directing mothers in finding medical care, housing or job training, most importantly Kay was there to listen and support them. She recruited and trained hundreds of volunteers, led fundraising and donation efforts, spoke at schools, churches, and organizations, and worked directly with families. Throughout her life, Kay received many honors for her work including the Marian Medal Award, the John Cardinal O'Connor Award, and The JC Penny Golden Rule Award. Kay was deeply loved by her husband, children, grandchildren, and extended family, and was the center of all holiday events and celebrations. Everyone was welcome in her home, and her cooking and humor were legendary. Kay enjoyed traveling, fishing, and playing ping pong with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Calling Hours for Kay will be held on Friday, January 1, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Riendeau-Mulvey, 467 Bay Street, Taunton, MA, followed by a Mass of Christian burial Saturday, January 2, 2021, 10 a.m. at Saint Ann's Church, 660 North Main Street, Raynham, MA.
